I am currently reading The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka, where the ghost of photographer Maali Almeida investigates his own murder. The action takes place in the context of the Sri Lankan Civil War, so it’s been very interesting to learn more about this period. The first person narrator is fun and full of irony, which makes for a very enjoyable read that I will be taking with me on the plane.

Once I’m in Spain I’d like to choose a few Spanish titles to enjoy by the sea. I haven’t decided on all of them yet, but I’m looking forward to reading two books by Catalan author Irene Solà: Te Di Ojos y Miraste las Tienieblas and Canto yo y la montaña baila (this last one is translated into English I Sing and the Mountain Dances). They’ve been highly recommended by several people and seem intriguing: tapping into the supernatural and the wilderness that the characters find both in their surroundings and deeper within.

The first book that I will be reading this summer is In Ascension  by Martin MacInnes. I am reading this book because Mr. Ager suggested that it might be an accessible way into the Science Fiction genre which I have found rather impenetrable on previous attempts.

The protagonist is a scientist from the The Netherlands who develops a method of growing food in low gravity conditions which will then enable space travel.

Let's hope that I finish this one!
