Poem: 'Friend'

 by Alice C

you’re like the egg in my soufflĂ©

a well-liked aunt who’s come to stay

a reference book when I’m in need

a cat I might forget to feed

and though an absent minded friend

would drive most people round the bend

you’ve somehow let me stick around

our friendship’s yet to run aground

please know I’m ever grateful for

your endlessly receding shore

your disregard for keeping score

and tent with room for three or four

you’re the chocolate they leave on your pillow for free

the mark on your face after hugging a tree

the one spot in the office that fits a space heater

and like the excretory organs of a bee you make life sweeter
