A car called the Thrust SSC (Supersonic Car) won the record for the fastest car in 1997 and has held it ever since. It is powered by two Rolls-Royce Sprey turbofan engines, which were also used in British f-4 Phantom II Jets.
These engines burn around 18 litres of fuel per second. The car has around a total of 110,000 brake horsepower (the average car has around 200!) and has a top speed of 1228 kilometres per hour (763 miles per hour), with an acceleration 0-62 mph or 0-100 kmh of 4 seconds, impressive but not record breaking.
This makes it the current fastest car on the planet!
