This
is the third time that the survey has ran and trends are beginning to emerge. There
are firm favourites who have kept their top spots across the last six years:
Harry Potter, Noughts & Crosses, The Great Gatsby and The Hate U Give,
among others. But the list isn’t just golden oldies; Babel, or the Necessity
of Violence and The Bandit Queens are some of the newest releases to
make the list, grabbing top spots despite being out less than a year.
The rise in popularity of the graphic novel is also reflected
in pupil and staff choices, with the wonderfully illustrated Heartstopper,
Maus and Fun Home garnering many votes.
Our
readers’ choices continue to be wonderfully diverse. The 100 top titles are 18%
more ethnically diverse authors than the ‘Penguin 100’ and 11% more than The
Independent’s 40 ‘best books to read before you die’.
