Artificial Intelligencer

From Alexa to Self-driving cars, Artificial intelligence is growing rapidly and people even think that it may be as advanced as humans. In this article I will be discussing what AI is, the benefits it can bring and the negative impacts it can have.

The definition of artificial intelligence is the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages. In 2020 around 16.7 billion pounds was spent on AI and this could increase to between £27.2 billion and £35.6 billion by 2025, at annual growth rates of roughly 10% and 16% respectively. It is incredibly important in enterprises and businesses, as it can give businesses insight into their operations that they may have had no clue about before, and even in some cases, AI can perform tasks better than humans themselves, especially in tasks that consist of repetition and detailed oriented tasks.

Artificial intelligence can hugely reduce human error. As most errors are due to the fault of the human, and AI, if programmed correctly, can lead to no errors at all, which can be crucial to business success. Another big advantage of AI is they take risks instead of humans, this allows us to overcome many risky limitations and do tasks that may have been too dangerous before, such as defusing a bomb or exploring the deepest oceans which can be hugely beneficial. The last and final advantage I would like to talk about is that Artificial intelligence is available 24/7. A normal human usually can work 4-6 hours without the need for a break, and lots of hours can result in a drop in the quality of work, humans also need days off and sleep. Whereas with AI, it can work 24/7 with no breaks and it never gets bored with the same old repetitive tasks, which can be much cheaper for businesses in the long run.

However, even though there are many benefits that come with this amazing piece of technology, there are plenty of drawbacks, such as the high cost of creation. AI is changing and updating every day, and the machines are very costly to maintain due to repairs and faults which may occur regularly. Artificial intelligence will make humans lazy which will in turn make humans reliant on them and heavily affect future generations for the worse. The last and final drawback I will talk about is Unemployment. With AI being able to replace people's jobs, every organization is looking to replace the minimum-qualified individuals with AI robots that can do similar work with more efficiency. This means the unemployment rate will increase drastically, leaving the government with different economical issues.

In conclusion, I believe that Artificial intelligence is great and will change the world forever, but there will always be different consequences that come with it. What's your opinion on the topic?
