Stranger Things: Is the Hype Still There?

by Old Portmuthian (and former Portsmouth Point editor) Nicholas Lemieux

Although it has more than earned its reputation as one of Netflix's biggest shows, both critically and commercially, the hype surrounding the premiere of Stranger Things Season 4 seems significantly more subdued when compared to the anticipation built around prior seasons. At first glance, this may seem exceedingly bizarre: the show continues to be held in high regard for its strong acting, creepy gravitas and skilful balance between horror, sci-fi and 80s cheese. None of its seasons has been especially accused of a decline in quality and no controversies have really unfolded. So, what gives for the lack of hype?

The fact of the matter is, we literally have all the time in the world; it has been more than two years since the release of Season 3 and, with the next season not slated to air until sometime next year, it can be hard to blame viewers for losing interest in a story that just flat-out refuses to end. Even more ironic, considering this is a Netflix show we're talking about, a company that doesn't exactly have the best track record of letting shows last long enough to fully reach their potential (you'll forever live on in my heart, American Vandal . . .)
