Review: Godzilla vs Kong

 by Wilf Brown

Covid delayed many things, the release of blockbuster films high on the list. Given this, it was perhaps no surprise that the collective anticipation surrounding the release of new ‘Godzilla vs Kong’ was significant. And people flocked to the big screen in their millions. Fan of the Hollywood “battle of the titan” type film as I am, I decided to take a closer look.

The story goes like this: five years after defeating his nemesis King Gomorah, Kong and his friends undertake a dangerous journey to find his true home. However, they soon find themselves up against an angry Godzilla as he wreaks chaos around the world. The initial battle, caused by mystery forces, is only the beginning of a journey that takes us deep within the core of the planet.

People’s views of the film have been incredibly different, some described it as the best film on Earth, others hated it with a passion!

In my opinion, the film was quite good, and definitely something I would watch again and recommend, though it was not without flaws. There were a few moments where the movie looked less promising, for example, when Maddison and her geeky friend, Josh, asked a shopkeeper about the whereabouts of a podcaster they were searching for, the whole conversation was painful to watch, even though the film tried to inject some extra humour into the movie.

Another flaw was the plot twist at the end of the movie, when Godzilla and Kong worked together to defeat Mecha-Godzilla. The reason I thought this was unlikely is that Godzilla’s and Kong’s ancestors have long been rivals. It therefore seems highly unlikely that Kong and Godzilla would team up together in such circumstances and then Kong would NOT kill Godzilla after they both defeated Mecha-Godzilla.

Other than that, the movie was a thrill to watch and various parts like the sea battle, really lived up to the blockbuster hype.  It’s also good that the story is so well tied in with the previous films such as Godzilla: King of Monsters, but also Kong: Skull Island.

So, I would give this film:

Story: 9/10

Acting: 9/10

Action: 9.5/10

Climax: 9.5/10

Screenplay: 8/10

Overall: 9/10
