10 Reasons You Should Get A Fish

Balloon-Belly Molly

Recently, we welcomed two fish, a Balloon-Belly Molly (called Nemo) and a Sailfin Molly (called Sushi) to our family. Here are ten reasons why you, too, might consider buying a fish:

1. Keeping fish helps reduce stress levels:

Fish are known to have a calming effect on people and seeing them glide through the water can help you relax and create a quiet space for you.

2. They actually improve productivity

Because of their calming nature they can help you keep focused when working so that you can really increase your productivity.

3. They cost less money than most other pets

Whereas cats, dogs and other pets can be really expensive (with the food, vets' bills, etc) really adding up), fish cost a fraction of the price (although there is an up-front investment in buying the tank, filter, etc).

4. Fish don't suffer from separation anxiety

Lots of pets, such as dogs, hamsters, cats etc, can develop separation anxiety if their owners go away on holiday. However, you can leave fish for up to 2 weeks unaccompanied; you can get really well-priced food from Pets-at-Home that feed the fish every 24 hours so you don’t need anyone to come round to your house to feed your pets. And no need for kennels.

5. They can actually get emotionally attached to their owners.

Fish are able to recognize their owners and sometimes form an attachment. Many scientists that worked on the Archerfish study reported that fish  appearing anxious and skittish if a stranger walked into the room, compared to a loving spit of water at a familiar sight.

6. They are really low maintenance.

Unlike lots of other pets, fish are really low maintenance - as all you really need to do is feed them once a day and clean out 30% of their water every 2 weeks.

7. Watching fish is a very aesthetic experience.

As well as having loads of health benefits, fish bring people aesthetic enjoyment as they watch the beautifully-coloured fish swim gracefully around the tank.

8. Fish help you sleep

Lots of professionals say that looking at fish before you go to bed and just watching them for 4 or 5 minutes can help you sleep better.

9. They improve your mood

They can actually make you feel happier and more relaxed

10,  Fish keeping is a very emotionally rewarding hobby

Watching your fish grow and thrive under your care is really rewarding.
