Why Piers Morgan is a National Treasure

Piers Morgan is an extremely polarising figure, who has been at the centre of many of British TV’s greatest moments and largest controversies. Whether you love to hate him or simply love him, he is certainly one of the most entertaining people on British TV and I believe that not only will
Good Morning Britain rue the day they let their greatest asset slip through their fingers but, breakfast TV as a whole will suffer dire consequences because of Morgan’s departure.

Morgan departed Good Morning Britain as a result of ITV bosses reportedly asking him to apologise for his comments about the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle. Whether you choose to believe her comments in her explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, you cannot dispute the fact that the controversy helped bring more viewers to Good Morning Britain. In fact, Piers Morgan’s final day at GMB was the first day they beat BBC Breakfast in the ratings battle between the two breakfast shows.

Since Morgan’s acrimonious departure average viewers for GMB have plummeted by 250,000; the difference between total viewers for GMB and BBC Breakfast has grown to 1 million viewers and over 200,000 signed a petition for him to return to GMB. This proves just how valuable and entertaining Morgan was; not everyone agreed with his opinions, but they drew debate. And what else should a TV show do, but draw debate and entertain its viewers?

In many disillusioned people’s minds, his opponents had claimed their latest victim. However, they have not. Morgan will return this week with Piers Morgan’s Life Stories and it is quite likely he will receive a job from GB News, as they try to change British media from somewhere the controversial are culled to somewhere they are celebrated. His fans will flock to his new television show and his opposers will follow him anyway as they look for another excuse to remove him from TV.
