However this year only 22,000 fans will be attending live in the stadium, making it the lowest attended Super Bowl since records began. Not only is this year special due to it occurring during a pandemic but it is also the first time a team is playing a Super Bowl in their home stadium. How the NFL allocates places to host the Super Bowl is similar to how Fifa allocates places to host World Cups however instead of countries paying Sepp Blatter and his friends significant amounts of money, NFL franchises put in bids and the NFL owners make the selection on who hosts the game each year, these decisions are usually made years in advance much like the Fifa. Furthermore, it is also the former New England, now Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady’s 10th Super Bowl appearance in his current 21 years playing career, the most by any player in the NFL.
However, the main reason to watch this game and why I believe it to be a great matchup is the level of talent and determination of both teams, with Kansas City’s 2018 MVP (Most Valued Player) quarterback Patrick Mahomes at the helm and not to forget their star wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce proving to be dominant forces in not just the AFC but in the whole league this season. Nevertheless, this should not undermine the talent on Tampa Bay’s team with players such as the formerly mentioned quarterback Tom Brady also known as the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time), running back Leonard Fournette, wide receiver Mike Evans and tight end Rob Gronkowski. Both teams also have had impressive records this regular season with Kansas City going 15-2 and Tampa bay going 11-5. In addition to the regular season record, both teams have had great postseasons (playoff games) with Tampa winning against formidable opponents such as the New Orleans Saints with future Hall of Famer Drew Brees and the Green Bay Packers with former league MVP Aaron Rodgers. Kansas City had also beaten difficult opponents such as the Cleveland Browns with former Heisman Trophy winner, Baker Mayfield and the Buffalo Bills with potential MVP candidate, Josh Allen. Although the actual game is the most important part of the Super Bowl, the infamous halftime shows should not be ignored. Especially for the past 30 years, musicians and bands such as Prince, Michael Jackson and The Who have headlined the prestigious spot and are often accompanied by elaborate sets, dancers and costumes. Furthermore, it should not be a huge surprise that food is a large part of the celebrations and has become a tradition of sorts with the most popular foods often being chicken wings, pizzas, hot dogs and burgers. It is estimated that during this game Americans eat approximately 1.2 billion chicken wings and more than 48 million pizzas. Moreover, the Super Bowl commercials have also recently become highly anticipated much like John Lewis Christmas adverts in the UK with recurring characters such as Mr Peanut, the mascot for Planters. Not only are these advertisements taken up by food companies, but they also usually include Movie trailers to build up anticipation one example of this was the first trailer for the upcoming and heavily delayed James Bond movie ‘No Time To Die’.
Even if you have never seen the game before and don’t have a clue about the rules I encourage and recommend you to watch the short video linked in this article. Even though you cannot watch the official Super Bowl ads live in the UK because a large portion of the products advertised are sold exclusively in the US, the half-time show is shown, this year featuring ‘The Weeknd’, and is certainly a spectacle to watch. Although the 11:30 pm start time might scare you off, I highly recommend watching this phenomenal sporting event which only occurs once every year.
