Supporting the Trussell Trust this Christmas.

 by Daisy Watson-Rumbold

On 12th November, the Trussell Trust, a nationwide network of food banks, released figures showing that the UK has more than 14 million people living in poverty, including 4.5 million children, most of whom rely upon Trussell Trust-supported food banks to attain essentials such as food and hygiene products.

It's clear that the economic consequences of COVID-19 have been detrimental to the lives of so many people and have left many families unable to fund necessities such as food, without support from external organisations. Not only has this pandemic affected the way people live but it has also affected the way food banks run. Operational changes have resulted in a need for more volunteers, more precautions and, consequently, more money.

However, just as much as this pandemic has had a significant impact on our way of life, the fundamental issue has remained the same. Lack of income, employment and support, leaving people destitute and unable to fund essentials remains the main factor in food bank usage. The data released showed that food banks had seen an increase in need over the past five years, regardless of crises, with a 74% increase. In 2017 alone, there was an 18% rise.

Because of these factors, the Trussell Trust is expecting its busiest-ever winter. While it is the government's responsibility to protect people from falling into poverty and provide support to those who find themselves in difficult situations, it is also down to us. By supporting charities that offer any sort of help to those less fortunate than us, we make a massive difference.

This Christmas, even if it is £5, try to donate to your local food bank. Alternatively, donate some non-perishable items to busy food banks in your area so they can make essential packages for families who genuinely need it.
