Poem: Unsuspecting

by Samantha Todd

You’ve bent me to your will
You’re lucky I’m a birch branch
Thin and nimble
Lean not brittle
I tried to resist
I wouldn’t snap at first
But the cunning force of your smile
Your gentle purr of words
The tender touch of your firm gripping hand
Ripped me from my senses
Tore me away from safety
All for you to thrash me around
Beat some bushes with
Drag me along your dirt laden journey
And then discard me;
Throw me somewhere into the unknown
To rot in the undergrowth
