Joe Burrow: Greatest Living Quarterback

by Seb Sharpe

All forms of American Football have reached what is called the postseason. The games now played are effectively finals with state and national champions taking their rightful places. The NFL (National Football League)  itself is only one round away from the coveted Super Bowl.

For most fans, one of the most interesting games of the postseason is that of the NCAA (college) final in which the two remaining colleges face off for the national championship. When we here in the UK think of university sports fixtures, we are familiar with small venues and wet nights; this is certainly not the case in the US. College football games regularly attract crowds we would expect in our Premier league and this final is no exception.  A  recent college fixture took place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in front of a crowd of 75,000 fans.

The College Final is arguably one of the most pressured games in the sport as NFL scouts are undoubtedly watching and a player’s performance on the night can make or break their future career before it has even started. This spotlight lay heavily this year on the two Quarterbacks: Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence. Both players have been major talking points with Burrow having the best (statistical) season of any college Quarterback of all time. It could be argued too that Lawrence has clearly had one of the best ever college football careers. Therefore the clash of LSU (Burrow’s team) and Clemson (Lawrence’s) was set to be a meeting of two heavyweights.

Now I'd like to focus on Burrow, in my eyes the greatest living Quarterback. It is fitting that as Tom Brady comes to the end of his career, the next great should rise to fill the hard-to-fill gap that he will leave. However, what separates JB from the rest is his charisma, his swagger. He completely breaks the stereotype of the well behaved, stiff, career Quarterback and is the figurehead of the new generation of brash and extravagant football players. Don't get me wrong, this is a dangerous way to live, Burrows is flying exceptionally close to the sun here. It is only through his ability and continued success that he earns the right to behave as he does.

Burrow is clearly a shoe-in for the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals in prime position to take him as they have the first draft pick. This would be a major win for the struggling Bengals;  a new exciting face could be exactly what the franchise needs to get themselves back in the mix.
