Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have both suffered at the
hands of the British tabloid press, both before and after their marriages.
For example, on Kate Middleton’s 25th birthday, she was
hounded by the paparazzi outside her flat, a scene that was far too similar to
one Diana experienced many years before. Kate also suffered from a breach of
her privacy on a private holiday in France, when pictures of her sunbathing
were released to a French newspaper.
Meghan Markle has also been under media scrutiny, but how
are the two experiences different?
I think it can be seen most clearly in comparing similar articles about Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, showing the clear bias that the press have against Meghan, in criticising her for the smallest things.
I think it can be seen most clearly in comparing similar articles about Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, showing the clear bias that the press have against Meghan, in criticising her for the smallest things.
One comparison that is almost laughable relates to the
cradling of their babies. In the Daily Mail during Kate Middleton’s pregnancy,
a headline reads: Not long to go! Pregnant Kate tenderly cradles her baby bump
while wrapping up her royal duties ahead of maternity leave - and William
confirms she’s due ‘any minute now’
This positive and supportive headline contrasts greatly with
one published again, by the Daily Mail, only a year later. The headline reads:
Why can’t Meghan Markle keep her hands off her bump? Experts tackle the
question that has got the nation talking: is it pride, vanity, acting - or a
new age bonding technique?
This is just one example of an array of articles regarding
Meghan Markle, in which she is criticised for simple acts that Kate Middleton
has been almost praised for, such as her use of flowers for her wedding, eating
avocados and many more. This is not to say that Kate Middleton should be
criticised; she is a role model to many and much of the criticism that Meghan
Markle receives is unnecessary anyway.
Therefore, despite criticism regarding the way that the Duke
and Duchess of Sussex are stepping down, and arguments surrounding the issue,
it is clear that the tabloid press has been unfairly portraying Meghan Markle’s
actions, with more bias than necessary, as can be seen in the way they present
Kate Middleton. The issues that this may have caused can be seen to contribute
to their leaving, as Prince Harry said, ‘I lost my mother and now I watch my
wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.’
