Poem for Friday: 'Midnight'

by Honor Davis

The light is artificial
The air is deadly quiet
My humming can be louder now
My head can forget to be tired

Time goes faster here
As it would do in a dream
But I am so very awake
As I'm told by a headlight's gleam

Noise travels further now
Though there is little to be heard
Only a distant laugh
Or a lover's careless word

And a quiet narration
dampened by a need to be present
and a yearning for adventure.
So when my eyes dart your way
it is in curiosity from a fellow stranger

And the narration will shout louder
and I'll think up your story
to take me further than this night
further than our city's
false
lights.
