How the People's Vote Could Change Our Country Forever

Many of us have an opinion on a second referendum for Brexit but I for one are torn between the two and the consequences one could bring. On one hand, you have a second referendum, which undermines the 51.98% of the population that voted leave. But on the other hand, you don't have one and Brexit goes ahead, with a possible no deal or a very bad one. We all are aware of the current place Brexit stands, as option two, no second referendum. So, I am going to explore the option of a second referendum.

If we were to have a second referendum, 51.98% of the population would be undermined as the rest of us think that isn't right and therefore they feel that what they voted isn't good enough. This could mean if we have a second referendum, and a whole new Brexit war could be unleashed. The war of another referendum. About 48.02% would want another referendum as they voted to stay, yet this number may vary as people see the consequences of Brexit. It is up to them which side they support. Generally speaking, if we want another referendum, and if it gets chosen, more people would not want another because they voted to leave anyway. That would mean our democracy is wrong because the majority aren't getting their choice.

So how about changing our voting system? The Conservatives like to stay with tradition so probably wouldn't support this, meaning the UK’s voting system remains unfair. Labour though, are all for the working class man and might change it, but it still doesn't change what the people voted originally and doesn't make using another voting system right as the people voted using the current voting system.

Now I want to know what other people think. Here are two views from Year Seven:

Charlie Nicholls thinks, “There should be another referendum because when we voted to leave we were not told the circumstances of a no-deal Brexit. We should have a vote amongst the people to either vote on a no-deal Brexit, a deal Brexit, or to remain.”

Thomas Krol thinks, “It’s pointless. If you have a second referendum and you don’t get the answer that you want then you will just do it again. In the end, we could have seventeen referendums! It would be the end of democracy.”

  

To conclude, people do know now the consequences of Brexit and may want to vote again. This could mean we get a result of remain. Yet, like Thomas said, we could just keep going round in circles. Therefore, due to more supporting evidence for not having a second referendum, I believe we shouldn’t have one.
