The first point of call was Chawton cottage, where Jane Austen
lived and wrote some of her most popular novels. We were taken around the
cottage (which had opened especially for us) and were given full access to the
house and grounds.
After a restorative lunch, we walked to Chawton House where Jane’s
brother Edward lived. Far grander than the cottage, it is now a centre of
research, especially in women’s writing, and we were shown part of the
impressive library and examined some extremely rare books.
After that, we were taught a Regency dance ( more complicated that you might imagine!) and everyone took the opportunity to dress up and look the part!
It was a wonderful trip, and many thanks to Ms Hart who organised the whole day.
