Spring Watch: Blackbirds

by Tony Hicks

I captured this shot of a female blackbird sitting on her eggs at work. I have been watching her build the nest for over a fortnight and she has got two eggs so far. The female is identified by her bright orange-yellow beak and eye rings and brown feathers (despite her name). She will lay between 3-5 eggs; the female incubates alone and the eggs hatch at 13-14 days.
