Hooray; it’s Friday today and nearly the weekend.

 

For sailors , it is considered unlucky to begin a journey on a Friday.

 

In the Thai Solar Calendar, blue is the colour linked to Friday.

 

In the eighteenth century, the author Daniel Defoe wrote the book Robinson Crusoe. The main character (Crusoe) is stranded on a desert island and meets an islander there.  At first, they can’t communicate together and so he calls him Man Friday after the day that they meet.

 

There is a town in Washington, America called Friday Harbour. The town was named after Joseph Poalie Friday, who lived and farmed there in the nineteenth century.

 

Every Friday at 11am, the Globe Theatre in London sells a limited number of theatre tickets that cost just £5.  Bargain!!

 

In the UK, the term Black Friday is used to describe a day each year when many shops make huge discounts. The term was first used in Philadelphia, America in the 1960s. Police used the term to describe the crowds and chaos from tourists who came into the city for shopping and to see a yearly football game between the Army and Navy.

 

Friday is a special day for Jewish people. The Jewish day for Friday is Shabbat (Sabbath) : the day of rest. The Sabbath happens every week from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday.
