Donald Trump and Nikki Hayley
Whilst the election for US President is still 10 months away the fight for the Republican nomination is already underway. What originally started as 14 candidates is now down to 2, Donald Trump and Nikki Hayley.
Whilst the Republican candidate for President won’t be officially confirmed until the party conference in July, with only 2 candidates left it probably won’t take that long to decide who the Republican nominee will be.
Nikki Hayley
Despite losing the New Hampshire primary vote she has vowed to continue running for President. She was the Governor of South Carolina (2011-2017), as well as this she was the US ambassador to the UN (2017-2018). Within the party she is considered a “moderate” Republican, but in the age of Trump and his supporters. Her being viewed as a moderate Republican comes from her condemnation of the storming of the Capitol Building on January 6th 2021 and her support of Biden as the democratically elected President, this made her unpopular with Trump’s faction of the party. She has previously supported sending US Forces into Mexico to “eliminate” drug cartels with or without the support of the Mexican Government which many consider extreme. As Governor of South Carolina she banned abortions after 6 weeks. She has avoided answering questions on what she would do as President, but it may be a similar policy on abortion nationwide. Whilst some of her policies are extreme they aren’t extreme enough to win over the Trump voters.
Donald Trump
Donald Trump is currently being charged on 91 counts of crimes across 4 states. Despite the legality of it, he is still running for President in 2024. According to CNN statistics he has a 69% support rate from within the party . From his campaigning many believe that if he was to be re-elected his policies will probably be more extreme. He plans to increase executive and presidential powers, which many see as a threat to democracy. As well as having called for the replacement of civil servants with his loyalists, he also stated he would deploy military troops for domestic law enforcement. He has previously stated he would cut funding to the FBI after they investigated official documents being stored illegally at his Mar-a-lago home. Despite the probability of Trump becoming the Republican candidate being high, much is still to be decided even whether or not he can legally run for President.
