Arsenal v Liverpool: Problems with VAR

 by Lavakushan Madanlal

On the 23rd of December 2023, Arsenal visited Liverpool at Anfield on Matchday 18 of the Premier League.  During this match, Odegaard made a controversial handball inside the penalty box in the first half, which should’ve been easily awarded as a penalty in Liverpool’s favour but due to the scandalous technology, that has been giving wrong decisions over the past few years, called VAR, the decision of giving a penalty was not given due to it. After the match, the referees’ chief, Howard Webb, had said:

The game expects a penalty in this situation. I would agree.’

This is only one of several examples of the mistakes VAR has made over the course of the current 23/24 Premier League season.

These days referees rely too much on VAR and this has affected the game (causing a long time to make a decision or even make bad decisions). One way I think referees could make better decisions is by discussing with other referees and making decisions without going straight to VAR. It has been said that there have been over 16 VAR mistakes since the start of the season.

It was said that almost two-thirds of the fans are actually against VAR which makes sense when looking at the number of mistakes over the years. VAR has also contributed in some positive aspects as well.

So I think referees and the FA should make a decision on how to improve the use of VAR so there can be better outcomes.
