The Mid-term elections in the United States are an important part of American Democracy and of a President's term in office, and depending on whether or not the president's party does well or not will affect what legislation they are able to get through Congress. The Elections allow citizens to vote on who they want to Represent them in Congress.
What is Congress
Congress is the legislative branch of the U.S. government,which means it makes the laws. It is made up of the Senate and The House of Representatives. The Lower House, The House of Representatives is made up of 435 members and there is 1 for every 600,000 people. The house creates and votes on Federal Laws. The Upper House, The Senate, has 2 Senators from each state. The role of the Senate is to vote on bills, resolutions, amendments, motions, nominations and treaties.
Why is it Important to Control Congress?
Whilst the President is the Head of State they do not have the power to make Laws and Legislation and if the President's Party has control of the Senate then the President will find it a lot easier to pass acts.
Who Won this year's Midterms?
The Vote for the Senate has been won by the Democrats who have a slim majority. This is good for President Biden as he controls the higher house. Currently the Republicans lead the House of Representatives with a 9 seat majority over the Democrats, but this does not mean they have won because there are still 10 seats that have not been counted yet.
What is the Aftermath of these Elections?
Donald Trump has already announced his Candidacy for the 2024 elections. The Republicans did not do as well as they hoped in the Elections meaning that their “Red Wave” failed. This will make it harder for Donald Trump to Return to Office in 2024. The other main Republican who could possibly be running for President is Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis. President Biden has not yet said whether or not he will run again in 2024.
