The Elephant in the Room-The Crisis with our Elephants.

by Isobel Firth

Elephants are some of the biggest and most intelligent animals in the world, but over the last few decades their numbers have been decreasing rapidly. In Mozambique between 2011 and 2017 90% of the country's Elephant population had been killed. At the start of the 1900s the African Elephant population in Africa was  10 million and in the last 100 years it has decreased to 300,000.

Why Are They Dying Off?

The Elephant population is decreasing so rapidly because of Poaching. Poaching is when an animal or species is hunted for a certain reason. Inthe case of the Elephants it is because their tusks are made of valuable Ivory. Ivory is  made of the same material as teeth and fingernails. It used to make Piano keys,Musical instruments and pieces of art. The poachers take this Ivory from the elephant's tusks.

How Can You Help?

There are many ways to help with this issue; they range from adoption to just raising awareness through a cake sale. Whatever you choose to do is helping to save Elephants all across Africa, from losing their lives to poaching and Ivory trafficking.
